I recently discovered Kraft Tex, a paper based medium which behaves like leather. You can't rip or tear it but you can cut, emboss, paint, sew and punch through it. If it gets wet, it won't spoil. This makes it ideal as a book cover. In the video below, I show you how to use layers, pockets and textured papers to make a keepsake book with lots of secret places to store momentos.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JeDc-lsmaGk/V_pyjjbUIFI/AAAAAAAAOhU/IDebk1CM2k07RYs4aeXZjTxTZMpTURbEwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3589.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JeDc-lsmaGk/V_pyjjbUIFI/AAAAAAAAOhU/IDebk1CM2k07RYs4aeXZjTxTZMpTURbEwCLcB/s640/IMG_3589.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Have you heard of Kraft Tex? No me neither until recently. It's a paper based material which reacts like leather. Apparently those tags on the back of jeans are made from it. You can paint, punch, emboss, stamp, iron, stitch, wash and crumple it. It's just what I've been looking for to create notebooks of a size and shape I want without having to buy a notebook and then alter it. I bought mine from Amazon and the size is 19" wide by 1.5 yards long so plenty to play with. And yes, you can cut it with the Brother Scan and Cut. I used a standard blade set at 12, speed 5 and pressure of 1. There are sooooo many possibilities and I started with a shabby chic style notebook.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-442MpyGxc7g/V_pynRIqc3I/AAAAAAAAOhc/ukMDxOrYDQozIizBlOfoBu4eGKNeWWIiwCEw/s1600/IMG_3591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-442MpyGxc7g/V_pynRIqc3I/AAAAAAAAOhc/ukMDxOrYDQozIizBlOfoBu4eGKNeWWIiwCEw/s640/IMG_3591.jpg" width="560" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It started as an A5 piece. I folded the right hand edge in 1 1/4 inches to make a seal over the main cover. You'll see in the video below how I made the fastening and attached the lace on the front cover. By the way, the video is badged up as www.atticlane.com. That's because after 2 months of frustration trying to move the domain to a new host, the transfer has gone ahead and soon I'll be launching the new website! There are a few more tweaks to make but hopefully in the next month it will go live!!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I attended a work conference mid week which meant a very nice overnight stay at Stratford on Avon. A friend and I had time to nip into town to visit a favourite shop which we call the Christmas shop but is really called <a href="http://www.nutcrackerchristmasshop.co.uk/">The Nutcracker Shop</a>. Among the glitz, pinch faced elves and pink frou frou, I got some inspiration for using a rather good stag shape I have on my Brother Scan and Cut. I spent a pleasant evening cutting and sticking Mr Stag onto cards. The tartan paper definitely lends itself to this shape!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XlqHHjLME6E/V_AbqIpgEjI/AAAAAAAAOgk/Elfm_7Uq-rMcy33mf4zWY5GgXBX6Ad1vQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3553%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="580" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XlqHHjLME6E/V_AbqIpgEjI/AAAAAAAAOgk/Elfm_7Uq-rMcy33mf4zWY5GgXBX6Ad1vQCLcB/s640/IMG_3553%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I didn't video this because it is so simple to do and it does rely on having some kind of stag shape or die in your stash. To save on paper I cut the rectangle of tartan paper I was going to use as a mat first, then cut the stag head from the inside. I stuck the stag head on a smaller piece of kraft card, matted it with the tartan paper and sewed it round the edges with brown thread and stuck the whole thing down onto a white card. I don't usually think of Christmas cards being better suited to men or women but these have a masculine feel to them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HxFPgrHpDsM/V_Abqm0LulI/AAAAAAAAOgw/xoLsVgQOTgURGpMMYP-cVpsYmSj6UHZtgCEw/s1600/IMG_3552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HxFPgrHpDsM/V_Abqm0LulI/AAAAAAAAOgw/xoLsVgQOTgURGpMMYP-cVpsYmSj6UHZtgCEw/s640/IMG_3552.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I then cut a thin piece of kraft stock card, stamped "Merry Christmas" onto it and poked two square brads into the ends. It doesn't show in the pics but this greeting stands a little proud of the card because I stuck it on with 3d foam pads. Once the cards were finished it was time to add a tiny stag scene to the front of the envelopes. I'm still enjoying these lovely scenic stamps from <a href="http://www.card-io.com/acatalog/Festive-Fun-Collection-5-Stamp-Set-Multibuy.html#SID=39">Card-io</a>.<span id="goog_2115098831"></span><span id="goog_2115098832"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5wC0RQho06c/V_AbqZgS4BI/AAAAAAAAOgw/ecq0oTqF35odmjUISmES8myylDs_5lxDwCEw/s1600/IMG_3559%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5wC0RQho06c/V_AbqZgS4BI/AAAAAAAAOgw/ecq0oTqF35odmjUISmES8myylDs_5lxDwCEw/s640/IMG_3559%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I'd pre-ordered some Tim Holtz stencils a few weeks ago and today they arrived so I had a play day and took a fuzzy photo. (Ooops not sure why it's out of focus!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lM6szRTN-7Y/V_AfBczwYMI/AAAAAAAAOg4/iR1dDHGDX501tdnsPJTSnw1UqUptgRT0QCLcB/s1600/IMG_3557%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lM6szRTN-7Y/V_AfBczwYMI/AAAAAAAAOg4/iR1dDHGDX501tdnsPJTSnw1UqUptgRT0QCLcB/s640/IMG_3557%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"> On the tag in the middle, I spritzed a pale green colour through the music stencil and a darker green through the tree shapes. Before adding a glitter medium through the sort of half tree stencils (designed to look like snow on the trees) I rubbed distress glaze over the dried trees to prevent the green below seeping up and dis-colouring the glitter. I like this effect but it will need more play. Maybe tomorrow.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">I don't usually decorate the front of my christmas card envelopes but I had these rather nice kraft envelopes which I thought needed a subtle jooshing-up. I didn't want to glitter-to-the-max but I wanted a proper wintery theme to reflect Yule and the winter Solstice as well as Christmas. These stamps from </span><a href="http://www.card-io.com/acatalog/Latest-Products.html" style="text-align: justify;">Card-io</a><span style="text-align: justify;"> fitted the requirement perfectly and you don't need a lot of "stuff". Something sparkly, a white and a black ink pad and you're good to go.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e29wOxOXhE4/V-p_AMW5o-I/AAAAAAAAOf8/xsHEqexu00gCwUzJv2ZsYfO7eKAoMXhBwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="628" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e29wOxOXhE4/V-p_AMW5o-I/AAAAAAAAOf8/xsHEqexu00gCwUzJv2ZsYfO7eKAoMXhBwCLcB/s640/IMG_3550.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you decide to do something similar, don't forget to leave space in the middle for the address and another top right for the stamp! It's easy to get carried away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7j1BICHq6vc/V-p_c6KgUNI/AAAAAAAAOgA/mmsN8kSuEwgeH-f-h5yVJCV1qDThL5hLwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3551.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="628" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7j1BICHq6vc/V-p_c6KgUNI/AAAAAAAAOgA/mmsN8kSuEwgeH-f-h5yVJCV1qDThL5hLwCLcB/s640/IMG_3551.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the video so you can see what I did and I hope this inspires you. Enjoy!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A few weeks ago I bought some Starlights paints from <a href="http://www.imaginationcrafts.co.uk/imagination-products/starlights">Inspiration Crafts</a> which are beautiful and perfect for projects such as this. They cover well and shimmer as the light catches them. I no longer need to buy specialised base card, I can just paint what I need. So for example in the video you'll see I punched the leaves around the flower from card stock painted with a white starlights paint. It doesn't show so clearly in the pictures below but in real life those leaves really shine out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dqnxGwJx2aM/V-eVPVGvf_I/AAAAAAAAOew/TTlrvKNoQpMXKi4bEn7c1aUzt-dN5uT7wCEw/s1600/IMG_3443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="624" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dqnxGwJx2aM/V-eVPVGvf_I/AAAAAAAAOew/TTlrvKNoQpMXKi4bEn7c1aUzt-dN5uT7wCEw/s640/IMG_3443.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">These are two notebooks I was asked to create for a friend's two small daughters. My brief was "make it pink and make it glittery!". I like pink and in moderation I like glitter but I rarely put the two together. But the brief set off an association of ideas and the picture I had in my head was a confusion of fairy tale princesses such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White in a garden. It all made sense when I started planning these books around the idea of flowers and faded roses. I know my flowers don't look much like roses but I'm no gardener ;) I also wanted a "clean" look so white was always going to play a strong role.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
In this video I am working on the two books at the same time but I've edited so you see the process for only one book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In fact, these are not completely finished. I will add some little personal details for the girls later and because I know these are for christmas gifts, will pop some little doo dads in the pocket at the end of the book. It will balance the inside of the books...<br />

They don't look exactly like flowers but I rejected the idea of positioning them back to back to be more flower like because they lost their bat shapes. I saw this small metal stencil used on some You Tube videos and having tracked it down, bought one. It's by Stampendous and is called "Picasso". I've had a good old mess about with it and really like the wave shapes and curves. They're the shapes I'm not good at! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mRYj92BMYaE/V9lDG7yjuhI/AAAAAAAAOdc/iHG0lQr8Mb8rmaQAkO8S_5VY3bBbTQ6BACLcB/s1600/Picasso.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mRYj92BMYaE/V9lDG7yjuhI/AAAAAAAAOdc/iHG0lQr8Mb8rmaQAkO8S_5VY3bBbTQ6BACLcB/s640/Picasso.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I grabbed a piece of card and started playing and didn't stop. It turned into a <a href="https://www.zentangle.com/zentangle-method">Zentangle</a> inspired background but it needed something simple on top. So I cut some pink flowers, matted them on some darker pink which matched the pink mat on the back of the whole card. I made some massive dots for the centre of the flowers using some fabby nuvo cystals which dome beautifully and dry hard and voila! I enjoyed it so much, I made two!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s2F38RUXslc/V9lByGHK21I/AAAAAAAAOdQ/-U_DH8TeiSw0G2cKY41JTx6fK8oX39DdwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3348%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="448" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s2F38RUXslc/V9lByGHK21I/AAAAAAAAOdQ/-U_DH8TeiSw0G2cKY41JTx6fK8oX39DdwCLcB/s640/IMG_3348%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Doodle any shapes you like in the spaces and if you want inspiration, google "Zentangle" and you'll find loads of ideas.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This book was a commission and it grew out of a tag I shared on my blog www.weekdayhome.blogspot.co.uk. I've called it the Book of Layers because as you will see it is made of loads and loads of layers! The antiquing creams used are designed to be applied, dried and wiped back to expose the colours below. If you then seal that layer, it will protect your work below and you can continue adding colours and wiping back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The end effect is one of a book looking aged and worn. It's hard to remember this is just card.<br />

I'm not sure what material this imagined Gentleman's Journal was originally made of. It could have had a protective metal cover which has rusted away with time or it could have been a soft, moulded leather. You may see other possibilities in it but the history I've given it is that of an abandoned notebook found in an old, decaying, dusty library. It may contain dark secrets, lovers notes or it may be unused. We'll never know....</div>

Here are two things I love, the Nordic Embossing folders from <a href="http://www.crafterscompanion.co.uk/collections-c2157/nordic-christmas-c7204">Crafters Companion</a> and a stamp from the same range. I'm starting to use embossing folders more because of the opportunities they give for adding texture and depth. Normally I prefer to start from scratch with that sort of thing but as the variety of folders becomes more interesting - I'm interested!</div>

This card is one of those projects you finish and place somewhere so it stays in your range of vision. Even a few weeks on from when I made it, it still makes me smile. It's a very happy card. There is as always a video to show how to make it but I want to draw your attention to the little houses below. See under the roof tops how it's got some very light grey shadow? Do this. It makes a surprising difference.<br />

This is the project I promised myself I'd do to make use of the lovely blue <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2016/09/fallen-leaves-background-mixed-media-tag.html">background tag</a> from an earlier blog post. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started with this tag base made with a mix of 4 Paperarts Fresco Paints, blobbed onto the tag and spread out using a palette knife. It's a nice technique and makes clearing up afterwards much easier because you just wipe the palette knife with a baby wipe. Lazy crafting :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is a very quick little tag I made using some the the lovely Fresco Paints from <a href="http://shop.paperartsy.co.uk/fresco-acrylic-paints-269-c.asp">Paperartsy</a>, a cut out tree I found as an SVG file for the Brother Scan and Cut (although I would have used a bare tree branch stamp if I'd had one) and some <a href="http://www.sunrisecrafts.co.uk/tonic-nuvo-embellishment-mousse/tonic-nuvo-embellishment-mousse-indian-gold.html">Nuvo gold paste</a> through a leafy stencil. The idea was to focus on creating a background using a palette knife instead of a brush to apply paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M8kswEnQb-o/V86dM1o-bvI/AAAAAAAAOaY/8LiAGvUEE-Y4r5on894grsFtFhnyjmU-gCLcB/s1600/IMG_3191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M8kswEnQb-o/V86dM1o-bvI/AAAAAAAAOaY/8LiAGvUEE-Y4r5on894grsFtFhnyjmU-gCLcB/s640/IMG_3191.jpg" width="332" /></a></div>
In this tag I blobbed 4 different colours of paint directly onto the card including one very light and one quite dark to give range and depth. You can mix it up as much as you like but the less you move it around, the more "blocky" the paint will appear. In the first sample below, I used the same colours as above but worked them a little more. <br />

In this mixed media page I'm tapping into the imagery I associate with mad professors in underground laboratories. Too specific? Perhaps. I think the result has a Victorian feel to it, perhaps due to the effect of the black ornate stencilling in the centre of the background. I used a wide range of techniques here including die cutting, stamping, stencilling, resist, hand drawn bottles etc. It also took half the weekend to finish, one of my longest projects but it's always rewarding when you translate the picture in your head to a completed piece so it was worth it. I've updated this page as a result of a request for a copy of my bottles used on this page and you'll find them with a couple of labels at the end of this post. </div>

The paints used for the bottles are from a range by Imagination Crafts called Starlights and they provided exactly the glow I wanted from the bottles. When first applied, I was worried it was too bright but once I'd inked the edges of the bottles it gave the perfect effect!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The glow effect shows up especially well in the bottle of Pickled Skulls, making it appear luminous.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I like working on projects which reflect the colours and seasons when they're created. This tag evokes that creepy feeling you sometimes get walking down a dimly lit road and hearing other unseen footsteps. It's the time of year when the clocks have moved back an hour to allow more daylight in the mornings but those dark early evenings feel quite spooky until you adjust to the winter clock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
My favourite thing about this piece is the background of skulls, created by using Deco Page glue as a resist through a stencil. What's great about this glue is that it dries properly dry and doesn't remain tacky.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to apologise for using two stamps which are no longer available. Both the iron fence and the Count himself are stamps from Waltzing Mouse which is sadly no longer trading. I'd suggest finding a clip art image of a cloaked figure, printing it on card and cutting round it. I try not to use things I know you can't get any longer but I have very few Halloweeny stamps on principal (because I don't like the way this old festival to respect and remember our ancestors has been re-branded as Pumpkin-Fest) and I wanted to get some use out of those I do have.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am, however, fond of a bat, me. We see lots of bats flitting about in the autumn twilight skies and they are fascinating. The speed at which they swoop around is amazing and our observations have taught us that they appreciate a spot of light which lets them see the insects and bugs they are looking for and that they fly around in ovals so if you missed it first time, it'll be back in a minute in roughly the same place. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Enjoy the video and the atmospheric music :)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some years ago I blogged about a couple of <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2012/05/andy-skinner-workshop.html">Andy Skinner</a> workshops I went to and learned some <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2012/03/its-been-quiet-in-week-day-home-for-few.html">seriously cool dry brush </a>techniques and ways to make things look very aged. Andy popped up again on a crafting channel recently and it prompted me to dig out the Deco Art paints I bought 4 years ago (they were still completely fine) and brush up (geddit!) on my techniques. Oh my, how much I've re-learned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qv1yypbNdtk/V81xfVxLL0I/AAAAAAAAOZA/zAzuYSa9iYk_pYZUk4pLVDjXGWxzn8vJACLcB/s1600/IMG_3112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qv1yypbNdtk/V81xfVxLL0I/AAAAAAAAOZA/zAzuYSa9iYk_pYZUk4pLVDjXGWxzn8vJACLcB/s640/IMG_3112.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Andy's take on mixed media is that it's about building up layers and making the piece look as if it's had years of paint applied - sometimes looking as if it's been stripped back before another coat is applied. He is a master of making cardboard look like heavy, rusty metal and uses a lot of browns and red in his work. In this tag I used his techniques but in different colours. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V3lFWPbuAu0/V81xfd54JAI/AAAAAAAAOZQ/f9M2Y6gGgvgA3YFZeD2yIYA7X6tMgNnKQCEw/s1600/IMG_3117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V3lFWPbuAu0/V81xfd54JAI/AAAAAAAAOZQ/f9M2Y6gGgvgA3YFZeD2yIYA7X6tMgNnKQCEw/s640/IMG_3117.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The texture and background in this piece are of greater importance than the embellishments. It's technique rich and I think the overall look of faded opulence works beautifully in these colours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ggNlHFZ6yM/V81xf2vZ9EI/AAAAAAAAOZQ/t4wWlpb9I1ozXkfyI_M5nqHi9iC0aVN4gCEw/s1600/IMG_3120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ggNlHFZ6yM/V81xf2vZ9EI/AAAAAAAAOZQ/t4wWlpb9I1ozXkfyI_M5nqHi9iC0aVN4gCEw/s640/IMG_3120.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The view from our kitchen window is of a huge horse chestnut tree in the field opposite. Each year it rings the seasonal changes but is always seen at its glorious best in autumn when the leaves turn from green to saffron and gold. I was standing at the sink looking out at the tree and wondering about nipping over the stone wall to gather some of it's colourful leaves to make a garland. Then I remembered I'm not skilled at nipping over stone walls and decided to make my own leaves using old card stock from my stash and doodling a bit on them for added interest. So, this is a quick project which would be fun to do with children who could draw on their own leaves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-52wMSYEuPuE/V8NNa-FGFoI/AAAAAAAAOXM/0J91PedhcPggmuIIjTxc9vvfyjZ3oI2pwCLcB/s1600/IMG_2980.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="450" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-52wMSYEuPuE/V8NNa-FGFoI/AAAAAAAAOXM/0J91PedhcPggmuIIjTxc9vvfyjZ3oI2pwCLcB/s640/IMG_2980.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Once all the leaves were strung up on some butchers twine, I dangled the garland round the lights we have draped over the mantlepiece.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This lovely mushroom stamp from Lindsay Mason Designs was embossed in white. When I stamped it in black ink, the image was much too dark. I wanted it to look luminescent in the moonlight. Embossing in white made it appear to shine and allowed the Distress Pens I used to colour it, to pop more than when I tried this with black ink. The moon is covered in bright white glitter and the little bats were cut using the Brother scan and cut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-omJ17DZA4EM/V8NOJ_QWIDI/AAAAAAAAOXY/ia6ADN2YbW4gP2ybDIFOkXqFkfcXSh86wCLcB/s1600/IMG_3007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-omJ17DZA4EM/V8NOJ_QWIDI/AAAAAAAAOXY/ia6ADN2YbW4gP2ybDIFOkXqFkfcXSh86wCLcB/s640/IMG_3007.jpg" width="352" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What really makes this ping is the white of the moon and mushrooms against that jet black sparkling night time background which worked better than I had hoped it would. I added a streak of blue in the top left hand side of the tag too. When you move the tag it gleams and I sacrificed photo quality to try and show you that. These very lovely paints are part of the starlight range from <a href="http://www.imaginationcrafts.co.uk/imagination-products/starlights">Imagination Crafts </a>and take me well outside my matt finish, chalk effect comfort zone! I'm not a shiny, glittery person but I do like a sparkle to catch your eye sometimes. It livens up cards and tags especially.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xISz9B0pvAI/V8NOJnKI4TI/AAAAAAAAOXU/k0vITV0q5jE9qkHJ8lwPlN2jWlQs8oS4ACLcB/s1600/IMG_3009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xISz9B0pvAI/V8NOJnKI4TI/AAAAAAAAOXU/k0vITV0q5jE9qkHJ8lwPlN2jWlQs8oS4ACLcB/s640/IMG_3009.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I've decided this autumn and winter to embrace the sparkle - and Himself has measured up for the next set of narrow shelves required to accommodate the growing pile of paint pots in the craft room. I need to see what options I have when I'm making a <strike>mess</strike> project and my own rule is: if I can't see it, I won't use it, so I won't have it. Thank goodness for shelves! Enjoy the video below :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As the colours of the landscape drift into olive, cinnamon and apricot, I want to use those colours in all my projects at the moment. Because I wanted to focus on the colours rather than the stamp, I took one stamp and used it in a different way in each of the three cards below. The first features my favourite way of applying gold! The effect is like gilding and shimmers beautifully. The background uses two colours of brusho pigmented powders and the video at the end shows how.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-70d9HuO5j6w/V8Sa9VWhcMI/AAAAAAAAOX0/qBhRiEUb4XsXntnFWUEzOCtqOs7MkvHLACEw/s1600/IMG_3042.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-70d9HuO5j6w/V8Sa9VWhcMI/AAAAAAAAOX0/qBhRiEUb4XsXntnFWUEzOCtqOs7MkvHLACEw/s640/IMG_3042.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The finished card was layered onto a really thin border of red, then onto gold mire card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e1jS5t0EzAI/V8Sa8_VcXnI/AAAAAAAAOXo/T49F__-XMv0zZgZgZP-yb2KSZja5XijfQCEw/s1600/IMG_3041.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="600" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e1jS5t0EzAI/V8Sa8_VcXnI/AAAAAAAAOXo/T49F__-XMv0zZgZgZP-yb2KSZja5XijfQCEw/s640/IMG_3041.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
See the shiney!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZpMZ3LV_SMs/V8Sa-E2frBI/AAAAAAAAOYM/IpBONO2J8lc5eFlzfMRd1ah5oiNAtVehACEw/s1600/IMG_3064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="564" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZpMZ3LV_SMs/V8Sa-E2frBI/AAAAAAAAOYM/IpBONO2J8lc5eFlzfMRd1ah5oiNAtVehACEw/s640/IMG_3064.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second card was an experiment. I used a Brother scan and cut to scan in the black stamped image. Then, I expanded it slightly and cut it out for use as a stencil to puff distress pen inks through. A flower made up of some shapes left over from other projects completed the card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A9v8xIAW-EM/V8Sa9vEB1ZI/AAAAAAAAOYM/RG18WfE3flMn_FzJMa5yq9JCur3NbqR4gCEw/s1600/IMG_3044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="598" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A9v8xIAW-EM/V8Sa9vEB1ZI/AAAAAAAAOYM/RG18WfE3flMn_FzJMa5yq9JCur3NbqR4gCEw/s640/IMG_3044.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AdoPmKK9R98/V8Sa9tyGmVI/AAAAAAAAOYM/jpFP7LuAbYgBIx_3ZLTqf5loVxAoj0wSgCEw/s1600/IMG_3048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="460" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AdoPmKK9R98/V8Sa9tyGmVI/AAAAAAAAOYM/jpFP7LuAbYgBIx_3ZLTqf5loVxAoj0wSgCEw/s640/IMG_3048.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Finally, I took the stencil and brayered some gorgeous shimmery paints over it. It was then layered onto some plain while card to really set off the colours and I added a happy birthday sentiment created in word art and printed onto plain card. I ran this through the scan and cut and cut out the scalloped circle twice, once round the sentiment and once a little larger from gold mirri card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rHbwDCa6qMA/V8Sa82NIuoI/AAAAAAAAOYM/Z895aZgG7ts9c2i7DWTrqbmnbDVsLQtBwCEw/s1600/IMG_3038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="616" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rHbwDCa6qMA/V8Sa82NIuoI/AAAAAAAAOYM/Z895aZgG7ts9c2i7DWTrqbmnbDVsLQtBwCEw/s640/IMG_3038.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Is it too soon for this?!? When I look at the stats for this blog I can see the most popular posts at the moment are the christmas projects including <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2015/12/christmas-baking-in-advance.html">Christmas Baking in Advance</a>, <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2014/12/christmas-stocking-felt-cutlery-holders.html">Christmas Stocking Felt Cutlery Holders Tutorial</a>, <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2012/10/festive-card-bunting-tutorial.html">Festive Card Bunting Tutorial</a> and <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2014/12/germany-and-weihnachstmarkt.html">Germany and a Weihnachstmarkt</a>. Since you're all looking for inspiration I'm sharing this project early to tickle your festive fancy. I do like doing things in advance and it's amazing how much more relaxing winter is when you've got a freezer full of <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2014/08/macaron-bliss.html">macarons</a>, <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2015/01/bertinet-christmas-baking-class.html">stollen</a> and <a href="http://weekdayhome.blogspot.com/2015/12/christmas-baking-in-advance.html">frangipani mini mince pies</a> (wow that Bertinet recipe is GOOD!) ready for random visitors</div>

Many years ago when I used to design projects for a crafting magazine the deadlines meant we had to work 5-6 months ahead. It's a habit I got into and now I have little difficulty working on winter projects in summer and summer projects in winter! I see this early sharing of a snowflake tag as a public service. You're welcome. Mwahhh!!</div>

Aren't these mini tags lovely? The sparkle on the wings of the snowflakes was added using my ever present Wink of Stella Clear pen. Frugal tip - I think this is the only sparkly ink pen you need. I know there are loads of glitter pens available in different colours but I've experimented comparing my normal coloured pens (both Tim Holtz Distress markers and Copic) with added wink of stella over the top v spectrum noir sparkle pens and I can't see a difference. Save yourselves a LOT of money and just get one clear sparkle pen!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We're not quite in autumn yet but those soft colours are beginning to creep into the landscape and leaves. For this project, I've used a Tim Holtz die called Tattered Leaves but you can hand cut your own shapes. Fold a piece of card in half and draw half a leaf shape with the fold as the centre of the leaf. Cut and voila! Colour the edges of the leaves and roll the edges round a paint brush to make them curl in a leafy way. Cut out a circle from strong card and get your glue gun going. Add any embellishments you happened to have, raffia would have made a perfect bow on this but I couldn't find mine.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hyLTmsYmqS4/V7rW9fUajtI/AAAAAAAAOUU/npp6u7OuMjIAhMAWIxFEpjAp6teJBBcmQCLcB/s1600/IMG_2822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hyLTmsYmqS4/V7rW9fUajtI/AAAAAAAAOUU/npp6u7OuMjIAhMAWIxFEpjAp6teJBBcmQCLcB/s640/IMG_2822.jpg" width="432" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My excuse for even having this plastic pot in the house is that it was on offer :) Once it had been thoroughly emptied (sob) and was heading for the recycling, I thought what a shame it was to throw it because the shape was perfectly sturdy and practical. But I'm not a one for shouty marketing and this was too loud even to be relocated to the shed. (Is it just me who feels the urge to argue back with marketing slogans or ridiculous claims on inanimate objects?) I was standing beside the kitchen roll while having these deep thoughts and a little light bulb went "ping" in my head. Why not turn the nasty pot into a nice pot?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2IicWSj6ILM/V7rXtfRWXHI/AAAAAAAAOUc/G0CU5WFa8agZK0FnjFrv3HDr3X-U8P_RQCLcB/s1600/Purple%2BPot%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2IicWSj6ILM/V7rXtfRWXHI/AAAAAAAAOUc/G0CU5WFa8agZK0FnjFrv3HDr3X-U8P_RQCLcB/s640/Purple%2BPot%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="634" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The kitchen roll played a critical part as you will see in the video below and meant I could cock a happy snook at some nonsense on one of the craft channels selling a gloop and fabric set so you can make fairy houses. Really? Am I a princess? Am I a diddy fairy girl? And while we're on the subject, it's not "Fairy Dust" it's <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/brusho-crystal-colours/">Brusho's</a> and it's been around for over 30 years. Just because I craft don't treat me like a poppet. You're welcome. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Where were we? Oh yes, one square of kitchen roll and a decoupage type of glue is all you need to give your pot coverage and texture. (Look, if you want to make a fairy house that's actually completely fine, just <u>please</u> don't think you need someone else's special kit to do it, mwah x!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFh97fBsfis/V7rd8Rny-2I/AAAAAAAAOU0/9h-x_BJkarYFMDprMXpD2MMG7JdjiYP5QCLcB/s1600/IMG_2827.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="514" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFh97fBsfis/V7rd8Rny-2I/AAAAAAAAOU0/9h-x_BJkarYFMDprMXpD2MMG7JdjiYP5QCLcB/s640/IMG_2827.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once again, a project using my trademark water sprayed, scrunched, dried and painted flower stacks. But this time edged with a clear embossing ink pen and a little gold embossing powder added to give the edges of leaves and flowers some definition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-abrQsBGCQUQ/V7rd84-vSuI/AAAAAAAAOU8/Az6dF-jpVbYs8AgvoMlv9H8SC1_xU6BZACLcB/s1600/IMG_2840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="566" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-abrQsBGCQUQ/V7rd84-vSuI/AAAAAAAAOU8/Az6dF-jpVbYs8AgvoMlv9H8SC1_xU6BZACLcB/s640/IMG_2840.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a product called "Rusty Patina" because I had it in my stash and wanted to try it out but you don't need it. Once the kitchen roll and glue is dry, paint over with whatever type of ink/paint you have.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nuvo Crystal Drops come in a range of lovely colours and apparently dry solid after 24 hours. So I thought, how are they really different from Ranger Stickles or Liquid Pearls? Well, I found the Nuvo drops have a slightly more liquid consistency so they drop better and you can add other spots of colour wet into wet. What's nice is the added spots absorb into the original blob nicely and the whole thing dries into a smooth dome shape unlike Rangers which can have little tips sticking out. that's fine if you want that effect (which sometimes I do) so the Nuvo drops offer something different. When they dry, they really do dry rock solid and you could use them as a solid blob embellishment at the centre of flowers for example. If you drop them onto a craft mat and leave to dry, the next morning you can peel them off ready to glue onto other projects. I think they're fun!</div>

When I look at these old photos they seem to come from a more innocent, simpler time. I doubt that's entirely true. If these date from 1940's America then the faces looking out at us in a slightly self conscious way may have seen the depression and crop failures of the 1930's and war. Perhaps it's the reserve the faces exhibit which marks them out as coming from another era. In our times no one is camera shy (except me). Sex sells and sex tapes can bring fame and fortune to those who think such things are worth having. I'll keep my self respect intact and spare your blushes :)</div>
